Balchik is located on the Northern Black Sea coast. A town and seaside resort, situated terrace-like on a small bay on the Black Sea, Balchik is 31 km North of Varna in a beautiful inlet, 37 km south-east of Dobrich and 500 km East from Sofia.
Owing to its favourable location, Balchik is the third in significance Bulgarian port, after Varna and Bourgas.
Balchik has a long history. It springs to life towards the end of the 6th C. B.C. as the ancient Greek colony Crunoi (later Dionysopolis). After the Balkan War in 1913 it was included in the territories of Romania. At that time Queen Maria, struck by the beauty of the place, built a palace and a botanical garden, a chapel and a villa complex for the Romanian aristocrats.
The town has many historical and natural attractions, narrow beach strips, hotels, camping grounds. Apart from the palace complex and the botanical garden, which is the biggest and most diverse on the Balkans, the town also attracts tourists with its ancient spirit, reflected into steep pebbled streets and houses made of stone and adobe. The ancient atmosphere of the town has been preserved for centuries now.
